MEC Morweng Announces First Integrated Public Transport System for Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Wessels Morweng, on Tuesday, 23 July 2024, presented the 2024/25 budget vote at the North West Provincial Legislature today, highlighting several key initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and public transport.

In his address, MEC Morweng underscored the department’s commitment to effecting positive change through the judicious use of the allocated budget. He emphasized the department’s dedication to mobilizing communities for crime prevention efforts and fostering stronger relations between the police and local residents.

“We are committed to involving communities in crime prevention initiatives to create a safer environment,” MEC Morweng stated. “Our focus will be on supporting community police forums and structures through monitoring, capacity building, and funding, ensuring their active participation in crime prevention.”

The MEC also highlighted the importance of addressing livestock theft, which significantly impacts rural communities reliant on communal farming. By prioritizing this issue, the department aims to protect these communities’ livelihoods and aspirations.

A major announcement was the introduction of the first integrated public transport system in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. This pioneering initiative marks a significant step in improving public transportation in the region. Until the new system is fully operational, residents will continue to benefit from the current subsidized public transport services.

MEC Morweng assured that the Department would provide ongoing administrative and technical support to municipalities for establishing Registering Authorities, ensuring a smooth transition to the new transport system.

The department’s strategic focus reflects a commitment to enhancing safety, improving public transport, and supporting community development across the province.
