Winter often brings a spike in burn cases caused by boiling water, paraffin stoves, candles, and unattended heaters. Many of these incidents can be avoided with basic safety precautions.
Health workers at Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital shared the following essential safety tips:
Keep hot water and drinks out of children’s reach
Never leave open flames or stoves unattended
Use safety gates to block off kitchens and heating areas from young children
Ensure your home has a fire extinguisher or fire blanket if possible
Learn basic burn first aid – cool the burn with clean running water and seek medical help
“Most burn cases we treat could have been prevented with simple measures,” said one of the hospital’s emergency nurses. “Prevention is always better than cure, especially for injuries that can leave lasting scars.”
Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital encourages parents and guardians to educate children on fire safety and keep their living spaces safe during the cold season.
