Vryburg – Thursday, 6 July 2023 marked a momentous occasion as the 11th United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) South Africa Synod Conference commenced with an awe-inspiring Opening Worship & Holy Communion Service. The event, held at the AJ Wookey Congregational Church, was a harmonious blend of reflection, celebration, and spiritual unity.
Led by the esteemed SA Synod Chairperson, Reverend D. George, the service was imbued with a sense of reverence and gratitude. As the congregation gathered, the atmosphere brimmed with anticipation and a shared commitment to honoring the rich heritage of the UCCSA and embracing the future with renewed purpose.
The AJ Wookey Congregational Church, under the guidance of Reverend Keagile, provided a warm and welcoming venue for this significant gathering. The historic church, nestled in the heart of Vryburg, served as a fitting backdrop for the conference’s opening service, exuding a sense of tradition and community.
The service commenced at 7pm, as the congregation filled the pews with eager hearts and open minds. The sanctuary resonated with melodious hymns, heartfelt prayers, and the voices of a diverse and inclusive congregation. The UCCSA, known for its commitment to unity and social justice, stood true to its principles as attendees from various backgrounds and regions joined together in worship.
Rev. D. George, in his role as SA Synod Chairperson, led the service with grace and conviction. His words of wisdom and guidance set the tone for the evening, reminding the congregation of their purpose as a collective body serving the greater mission of the UCCSA. With eloquence and passion, he emphasized the significance of the conference and the importance of fostering unity and harmony within the church.
Throughout the service, fraternal greetings, messages of support and special prayers, were offered for the success of the conference and for the leaders, delegates, and participants in attendance. Amongst those that took to the podium was the Executive Mayor in the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, Cllr. Maje, who welcomed the congregationalists to Vryburg. The Executive Mayor highlighted the Church’s significant contributions to the socio-political development of the country. Speaking on behalf of the municipality and its residents, he expressed gratitude for the Church’s historical role in shaping education, politics, and the social fabric of South Africa. Cllr. Maje’s address, underlined the immense value the UCCSA holds within the community. “Indeed it is a pleasure and a privilege for us to welcome within our jurisdiction an old and a renowned Church, United Congregational Church of South Africa.” Said the Executive Mayor, crediting the London Missionary Society’s arrival and the establishment of the Church for providing formal education opportunities to the forebearers, thereby producing some of the sharpest political minds in South Africa.

The Naledi Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. C.J Groep, also took to the podium to will complete the conference delegates. The Mayor initiated the Fraternal greetings by extending a heartfelt welcome to all participants, acknowledging the diverse language backgrounds in the audience, and expressing his delight in being able to address the gathering in Afrikaans. His playful interaction with the audience brought smiles and set a joyful tone for the evening. Addressing the audience, Cllr. Groep emphasized the significance of the conference theme, “Reaching New Frontiers: Hope and Healing.” He expressed his admiration for the delegates’ commitment to exploration, envisioning a future filled with hope, and working together to bring hope and healing to fruition. It was evident that he held a deep appreciation for the purpose of the conference and the positive impact it could have on individuals and communities. “May the spirit of hope and healing guide you into this conference and beyond. We believe that each of those who have come from far and wide, that you will have a wonderful stay and a wonderful conference, from today until Sunday. And my prayer is that when you return home, travel mercies will be given to you by our Heavenly Father. Welcome to Naledi. We believe that you will have a pleasant stay. We hope and trust that the conference will benefit everyone. And everything that is done here, that it will stretch to the glory of our Heavenly Father. Amen.” Said the Mayor.
The congregation, moved by a deep sense of faith and devotion, joined in collective intercession and thanksgiving, acknowledging the blessings bestowed upon them and seeking divine guidance for the journey ahead. This included a prayer lead by Rev. T. Moreosele.
One of the highlights of the evening was the celebration of 21 years of mission and ministry as a synod. This milestone showcased the incredible growth, dedication, and impact of the UCCSA in serving communities across South Africa. The service paid homage to the rich history of the synod while also inspiring attendees to continue their transformative work in the present and future. With Rev. George encouraging the Congregationalist to look beyond the 21 years. The Reverend expressed deep concern about the condition of the Earth, highlighting the detrimental impact of human greed in the name of exploration and commercialization. He referred to an article by journalist Christy Brad, which discussed the threat to the unspoiled beaches of the West Coast due to gas exploration and mineral seeking. Reverend George drew a parallel between the Earth’s plea for justice and the story of the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8, emphasizing that the Earth is demanding justice from humanity, who have been entrusted as stewards of God’s creation. “Friends, our ecosystems are calling out for justice and it is calling upon Christians to act.” He preached.
As the service drew to a close, the profound symbolism of Holy Communion took center stage. The congregation, representing a tapestry of individuals with diverse stories and experiences, came together to partake in this sacred ritual. In unity and humility, they shared the bread and wine, recognizing the eternal grace and love of Jesus Christ that binds them together as one body.

Evident from the remarks by the General Secretary as he emphasized the importance of unity, transparency, and mutual support within the Church. He acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead and encouraged members to work together to address them. He extended fraternal greetings and prayers to all attendees and expressed his confidence in the future of the UCCSA.
“We belong to a great movement. We belong to a great heritage.” Remarked the UCCSA President, Rev. R.T.I. Hambira, as he blessed and brought the proceedings to an end, concluding day 1 of the 4 day’s Conference.The service served as a powerful testament to this truth, celebrating the past, embracing the present, and igniting hope for a future filled with love, justice, and transformative change.
