
As at Saturday, 20 February 2021, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa is 1 502 367. The North West Province making up 4% of these numbers, with 60 214 cases. The Vryburg Independent Post (The VIP) Team has taken the time to take a closer look at the spread the novel virus over the month of February to date in the North West Province. This was with a specific focus on the mortality rate in this period.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of many in South Africa and the world at large. A trace of grief is what this virus leaves behind and at times dissipating close to the entire family. To date, since the first reported fatality in the country, the Department of Health has announced a total of 48 940 deaths in South Africa. 1.8% of those fatalities are reported to be from the North West Province, with 1057 deaths.

Over the past 2 weeks the province has accumulated 124 deaths, with 30 deaths reported on Monday, 15 February 2021. Meanwhile, the Dr. Ruth S. Mompati District has an accumulative contribution over 7% of the total active cases in the province. This sees the district having the lowest number of active positive cases as compared to the other 3 districts.

On Monday, 01 February 2021, the North West Province had 9856 active cases. Fast forward to the Monday, 15 February 2021, the number now is at 5434. A clear indication that the Province’s recovery rate is rising and that the so much talked about second wave of the virus is being dealt with accordingly by the Provincial Department of Health and Nationally.
As at 6pm today, the Department of Health announced that 10 414 health workers, in South Africa, have received the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine.
