On Saturday, 23 May 2020, the Minister of Health Dr. Zweli Mkhize announced an increase of 1213 cases reported nationwide in the 24 hours that was in South Africa. “As of today, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa is 21 343” said the Minister.

With still just a below 1% contribution to the National infection rate, numbers in the North West Province continue to steadily increased. The province has now recorded 81 COVID19 positive cases. At a district level, an emerging hotspot seems to be the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District. The district has seen a sharp increase in cases over recent weeks. It now have the second most coronavirus cases in the province, after the Bojanala Platinum District. The Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District has a total of 26 positive confirmed cases. 21 of which are active cases.

The Ngaka Modiri Molema District has the third most confirm COVID19 cases. The majority of these cases have been identified in the province’s capital, Mahikeng, with 6 of the 9 cases. According to the Department of Health in the North West Province, Tswaing Local Municipality now has its first positive confirmed coronavirus case.
