As part of the police in the North West Province’s effort to dealing with lawlessness and stamping the authority of the state, following violence that erupted in Jouberton outside Klerksdorp, 18 suspects aged between 17 and 37 are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 24 April 2019 on a charge of Public Violence.

“The suspects’ arrest and subsequent court appearance stems from community protests that  began in Jouberton on Monday, 22 April 2019. During the protest, an unconfirmed number of members of the community comprising mainly of youth, barricaded roads and looted foreign national owned tuck-shops in Jouberton and Alabama.” Said Police Spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh.

The Police are said to still be maintaining their presence in the area where some of the roads are still barricaded.

Members of the community are urged to raise their dissatisfaction in a lawful manner and to work together with the police in exposing criminal elements that are posing as protesters. “The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, cautioned that the police will not tolerate lawlessness, including destruction of property as well as looting.” Reported Myburgh .
