Tiger Kloof Secondary School from Vryburg has once again demonstrated its excellence by securing the top position in the Provincial Road Safety Schools Debate Competition, held recently in Stilfontein. This victory marks the third time in nine years that Tiger Kloof has earned the right to represent the North West Province at the national level, solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse in this important educational initiative.
Tiger Kloof’s team of six young girls competed fiercely against other top schools, including Tiragalo Secondary School from Maquasie Hills. The debate topic, “The enforcement of rail freight can reduce fatalities on South African roads,” saw the teams engage in rigorous arguments, backed by thorough research and compelling presentations.

According to the media statement issued by the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, the competition was intense, with the four participating schools—each representing their respective districts—displaying exceptional debate skills that left the audience thoroughly impressed.
Dr. Hans Kekana, Head of the Department for Community Safety and Transport Management, lauded the participating learners and their teachers for their dedication. “Today’s teachers are facing more challenges than those in the past, yet they continue to produce future leaders. Today’s proceedings are a testament to their hard work,” Dr. Kekana stated in the media release.
He also assured that the Department would continue to support these young talents. “We commit to extending our invitation to all these participating learners to our continuous Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme in their respective districts. We want them to have firsthand experience in road safety campaigns and law enforcement operations, which are the programs they have been deliberating on throughout the debate,” he added.
Dr. Kekana emphasized that road safety is a top priority for the Department, with the primary goal being to create safer roads and save lives.
Tiger Kloof, representing Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, alongside Tiragalo Secondary School from Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District, will now move on to represent the North West Province at the national debate competition, which will take place in the Free State next month.
The other schools in the competition included Goldview Secondary from Ngaka Modiri Molema District and Leokeng Secondary from Bojanala District, both of which also showcased impressive performances.
Dr. Shadrack Mvula from the North West Department of Education also expressed his admiration for the learners. He described them as a “team of confident and brilliant learners” who will undoubtedly represent the Province with distinction at the national level. He further praised the collaboration between the Department of Education and the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, which has been instrumental in ensuring high-quality education and fostering awareness of road safety issues.
The Road Safety Schools Debate Competition is part of a national initiative aimed at encouraging learners to become aware of road safety issues while equipping them with vital research and public speaking skills. According to the media statement, the debate program plays a crucial role in shaping informed and responsible young citizens who are prepared to tackle significant challenges in society.
As Tiger Kloof prepares to compete on the national stage, the Vryburg community stands proudly behind them, confident that these young debaters will continue to make their school and province proud.
