State of the Art Library Worth R12 Million … Up in Smoke…

A state of the art library was set alight allegedly by protesting members of the community, yesterday, 11 July 2019, in Ottosdal. This library, said to have cost R12 million, included a library for the blind, as well as a kids play area.

The MEC of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Virginia Tlhapi has condemned the burning down of Letsopa Community Library in Ottosdal. “Preventing learners from their right to an education, workers from going to work and malicious destruction to infrastructure cannot be tolerated,” said Tlhapi.

The state of the art library was completed and handed over to the Municipality in the year 2014.

“It is sad when poor communities like those of Letsopa destroy property build to change their lives, especially for their kids who use these libraries to improve their performance at school and create jobs for the local people. We are comforted by the news that the Police has arrested the suspects and they should be prosecuted and if found guilty they should be locked up for a long time. Communities must never tolerate these kind of barbarism to happen with their properties”, concluded the annoyed MEC.
