NW Province Puts in Place Measures to Curb the Spread of the COVID19 Epidemic

Two weeks after the first case of COVID19 was announced in South Africa, the North West Province remain without any case reported.

The National Department of Health has to date tested a total of 4832 people around the country, 150 of which tested positive to the Corona virus. North West Premier, Prof Tebogo Job Mokgoro, on Wednesday, 18 March 2020, outlined the Province’s state of readiness to combat and manage COVID-19. Premier Mokgoro went into detail to explain that the North West Provincial Govenment (NWPG) has developed an intensified community awareness programme targeting communities, churches, traditional health practitioners, tribal authorities; material has been developed and is in circulation, 24 900 pamphlets in English and further 12 000, Setswana.

In an effort to curb the spread of the virus, Premier Mokgoro also announced that the suspension of all government events until National State of Disaster is lifted, the suspension of all training or conferences and big external meetings.

Hospital services, Port Health , national health laboratory services, emergency medical and rescue services, epidemiology and other specialist services are said to be rearing to get their hands dirty in the case were an outbreak is to occur in the North West. The premier also made mention of the 820 medical practitioners who have undergone training for the purposes of attending to COVID19 specific cases in the province.
