The North West Education department confirms an increase of 30 positive Covid-19 related cases as of Tuesday 23 June 2020 which now brings the department to a total of 62 cases.

These cases comprises of 22 teachers, 6 learners, a deputy principal and one non-teaching staff.

Provincial MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemelo says the department continues to work with Department of Health to render clinical support in schools.

“On behalf of the department, we wish to confirm that there are 62 cases of Covid – 19 registered by the department. This simply means our confirmed cases have increased with 30 until to date. I would like to indicate that all our schools have been attached to local clinics. Whenever there is a case at our schools, principals have been trained to isolate that individual to an isolation room. Then they call nurses to attend to attend to the isolated person. Again as a department we wish all people infected and affected by this virus strength and recovery”, said MEC Matsemela.

Matsemela further highlighted that a school is shut down in order to allow the health officials to conduct their investigations through screening and testing and tracing of close contacts of the identified person.

To date there are 14 schools that have been shut down in the province and they will reopen after they have been disinfected and decontaminated in accordance to the Department of Health recommendations.
