Mamusa Municipality Resolves Eskom Dispute as Power Cuts Lifted

Schweizer-Reneke – Mamusa Local Municipality says its dispute with Eskom has been resolved following urgent engagements aimed at preventing prolonged bulk electricity interruptions in the area.

The development comes after Eskom announced earlier this month that bulk electricity supply interruptions to Mamusa Local Municipality would proceed from 08 May 2026 due to the municipality’s outstanding electricity debt. The planned interruptions were expected to affect Schweizer-Reneke, Migdol, and surrounding villages during scheduled time slots.

In a statement issued by Municipal Manager Rantsho Gincane, the municipality confirmed that council had taken a resolution to urgently engage Eskom and enter into processes aimed at resolving the matter.

Among the resolutions adopted by council was the initiation of Section 78 processes of the Municipal Systems Act to determine Eskom as the most appropriate electricity service delivery mechanism, with support from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA).

Council also approved, in principle, the signing of a Distribution Agency Agreement (DAA) with Eskom based on terms agreed upon by National Treasury. The municipality further committed to settling its current Eskom account, including a reported R7.5 million payment expected in July when it receives its equitable share allocation.

According to the municipality, Eskom acknowledged receipt of Mamusa’s correspondence on 13 May 2026, and discussions with Eskom top management followed on 14 May 2026.

In a subsequent update shared by the municipality, residents were informed that the matter with Eskom had been resolved and that the planned power interruptions had been lifted.

The municipality said further updates and details would be communicated in due course as engagements continue.
