Vryburg, 26 October 2023 – The grand opening of Mompati Mall was not just a celebration of commerce; it was a testament to the enduring legacy of Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, an icon who left an indelible mark on the community and the nation.

Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, born on 14 September 1925, was a remarkable South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. Her life was dedicated to the fight for justice, equality, and human rights. Mompati was a close comrade of Nelson Mandela, a leader in the African National Congress (ANC), and a stalwart of the struggle against apartheid. Her contributions to the nation were immense, from her role in the Women’s League of the ANC to serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Switzerland.

In honor of her legacy, Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati’s name graces the district of Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, where Vryburg stands as one of its key centers. The naming of Mompati Mall, located in Vryburg, was a fitting tribute to her enduring impact on the community.

The history of Ruth Segomotsi Mompati is rich, and her legacy continues to inspire. The ribbon cutting at Mompati Mall was a poignant reminder of her dedicated service to the nation.

During the grand opening of Mompati Mall, the Mompati family was not far from the spotlight. Representing the family were Themba Matseoane and Neo Matseoane. Their presence added a deeply personal touch to the celebration, emphasizing the strong connection between the Mompati family and the town of Vryburg.

“The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a commemorative moment, one that acknowledged the legacy of Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and celebrated the culmination of eight years of hard work in establishing the mall.
