On 29 June 2024, Justice Dabampe was announced as the newly elected President of UNISA’s Convocation at the Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria. This marks the beginning of a four-year term for Dabampe, who is poised to make a significant impact on the future of the university. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the North West have extended their heartfelt congratulations to their Deputy Provincial Secretary, Fighter Justice Dabampe, on his recent election as the President of the University of South Africa (UNISA) Convocation. A significant achievement is seen, amongst his fellow fighters, as a testament to Dabampe’s leadership and dedication to the academic community.

The Role of the President of UNISA Convocation

The President of the UNISA Convocation holds a crucial position within the university’s governance structure. This role encompasses several key responsibilities and functions, which include:

1. Representing Convocation Members: The President acts as the primary representative of all alumni, current academic staff, and other members of the convocation. This involves advocating for their interests and ensuring their voices are heard in university matters.

2. Facilitating Engagement and Communication: One of the main duties is to foster strong communication channels between the convocation members and the university administration. This includes organizing events, forums, and meetings to discuss and address pertinent issues affecting the university community.

3. Supporting University Governance: The President participates in various university governance bodies, such as the Council and Senate, contributing to strategic decisions and policies. This involvement ensures that the perspectives and interests of the convocation are considered in the university’s decision-making processes.

4. Promoting Alumni Relations: Enhancing the relationship between the university and its alumni is a significant aspect of the President’s role. This includes networking, fundraising initiatives, and creating opportunities for alumni to contribute to the university’s growth and development.

5. Overseeing Convocation Activities: The President oversees the activities and programs of the convocation, ensuring they align with the university’s mission and goals. This includes managing the convocation’s budget, organizing events, and implementing initiatives that benefit the convocation members and the broader university community.

Dabampe brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role. He has served in various capacities within the Lekwa-Teemane Municipality in the North West Province, including as a Councillor, a member of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee, the Chair of Finance, and a member of the Executive Committee in the Corporate Services and Good Governance section. Furthermore, Dabampe is a Member of Parliament in the North West Provincial Legislature and is affiliated with the South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM). His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Science and Public Administration from UNISA and a Certificate in Leadership in Municipal Governance from Wits University, demonstrating his broad understanding of public administration and governance.

The 2024 election saw participation from more than 700 UNISA students, staff, and alumni. While the election process was robust, some participants voiced concerns over the representation of women in leadership roles within the Convocation.

Justice Dabampe’s election to this esteemed position is a remarkable milestone, not only for him personally but also for the EFF North West, which views his achievement as a reflection of the party’s commitment to promoting capable and dynamic leaders across various sectors.

The EFF North West expresses confidence in Dabampe’s ability to excel in this role, believing that his leadership will bring about positive changes and advancements for UNISA and its extensive network of alumni and academic staff. The party looks forward to supporting Dabampe in his endeavors to enhance the convocation’s impact and contribution to the university’s success.
