Department of trade and Industry Calls on the Public to comment on the Bojanala SEZ designation.

The Department of Trade and Industry, through Minister Rob Davies, has issued a notice of the intention to designate a new Special Economic Zone for South Africa, the Bojanala SEZ (Special Economic Zone) in the Moses Kotane local municipality, in Mogwase in the North West Province.

This follows the publication by the Minister of Notice No 42451 in the Government Gazette of 10 May 2019, announcing the intention to designate the Bojanala Special Economic Zone and thereby providing the public with a 30-day time frame to give inputs and make comments.

Once designated, the Bojanala SEZ will be South Africa’s eleventh Special Economic Zone.

Minister Davies had received and approved a recommendation from the Special Economic Zones advisory board to designate the special economic zone after an application was submitted by the North West Government’s Department of Economy and Enterprise Development. “The Special Economic Zones advisory board was satisfied with the proposed business case and economic opportunities that underpinned this envisaged development,” the Department of Trade and industry said in a statement.

The Bojanala SEZ is a project management unit under the North West Development Corporation (NWDC) headed by SEZ Project Executive, Mr Davis Sadike.

The proposed zone will be developed on 1,175 hectares including the Bodirelo industrial park, situated in Mogwase, in the Moses Kotane local municipality.

The Bojanala SEZ will focus largely on mineral beneficiation especially for platinum group metals, as well as manufacturing, including mining capital equipment supply, agro-processing and renewable energy.

Minister Davies said in a statement that the designation of the special economic zone would afford the Bojanala region an opportunity to develop world-class mineral beneficiation infrastructure and go a long way towards ensuring that the economic value and associated economic opportunities of mineral endowments that abound the Bushveld Complex were optimised.

Members of the public must submit their comments or objections to the notice within 30 days from the publication date of 10 May 2019.
