STELLA, NORTH WEST – Police in Stella have opened a case of concealment of birth following the discovery of a deceased newborn baby at a dumping site in the Rekgaratlhile area.
According to information confirmed by SAPS, the incident was reported on Sunday, 5 April 2026, after a community member made the discovery and alerted authorities.
Dr. RSM District SAPS’s Warrant Officer Van Rooyen confirmed that the newborn was found at a local dumping site, and that the infant was not alive at the time of discovery.

“At this stage, the identity of the mother remains unknown and investigations are ongoing,” said Van Rooyen.
Authorities have clarified that the matter is being investigated as a case of concealment of birth.
Members of the public who may have information that could assist the investigation are urged to come forward and contact the Stella Police.
The incident has sparked concern within the local community, highlighting ongoing social and health challenges surrounding infant abandonment.
