2 New COVID-19 Cases Reported in the Naledi Local Municipality

The North West Province has, as at Friday, 19 June 2020, recorded a total of 1 758 COVID19 positive cases. 2% is now what the province contributes to the National coronavirus burden. The province has the fifth most reported cases amongst the 9 provinces, and it should be mentioned that the other four provinces below The North West amongst the reported cases per province , have a less than 1% contribution to the National COVID19 burden. Significantly, this a position that the province also occupied for the longest of times m, until the beginning of June.

The Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District, in the North West, has not been in the spotlight much as far as the infection rate is concerned, but if one is to follow the turn of events through out the course of this week , you will notice that there is something bubbling under. On Monday, 15 June 2020, the district had a total of 6 COVID19 positive confirmed cases, in a space of 5 days, they now have 10 positive cases. This is an average of 1 case per day so far this week.

Of late, the latest local municipality in the district to be burdened by the novel coronavirus is the Naledi Local Municipality. According to statistics released by the Department of Health in the North West Province, the municipality initiated its outbreak with 2 positive confirmed cases.

According to Statistics South Africa, Naledi has a total population of over 66 000 people (based on the 2011 census). The challenge that the Department of Health in the North West Province has is follow up on all the contacts.

According to unconfirmed reports on the issue, by sources known by The VIP Team, the immediate contacts of these two cases have been rounded up by the Department and have been tested, and results are being waited for. Our sources have also attempted to shed light on other issues related to the identified cases. They have alleged that the cases were reported by one of Vryburg’s Private Health facility. At the time of the publication of this article, the Department of Health in the North West Province was not available to confirm or deny such allegations.
