MAHIKENG – : The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West has, on Wednesday , 12 August 2026, announced the redeployment of Viola Motsumi, currently serving as the MEC for Education, as the party’s candidate for Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature.

The announcement forms part of a broader reshuffle within the North West Provincial Executive Council and Legislature, which the ANC says is aimed at strengthening governance, improving accountability and accelerating service delivery across the province.

According to the ANC Provincial Executive Committee, Motsumi’s redeployment is intended to strengthen the centrality of the organisation within the ANC Caucus and contribute to improved political coordination and accountability in the Legislature.

Motsumi’s move comes after her tenure as MEC for Education, a portfolio in which she has overseen from 2022 to 2026. The Premier of the North West, Hon. Lazarus Mokgosi has now designated Dr Desbo Mohono to take over as MEC for Education.

The party said the changes are part of a broader effort to ensure that both the Executive and Legislature fulfil their respective responsibilities, with the Executive focused on implementation and the Legislature strengthening oversight.

In a message, shared on social media, following the announcement, Motsumi expressed appreciation for the support she received during her time in the education portfolio and thanked the ANC leadership and members for the deployment and recognition.

The ANC said the incoming leadership arrangements should contribute towards stronger oversight, improved accountability and more effective coordination between government departments and the Legislature.

Motsumi will now be expected to lead the Legislature in a period in which the ANC has called for stronger scrutiny of government programmes, expenditure of public resources and commitments made to communities.
