The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams as the new Provincial Commissioner of the North West, with effect from 1 August 2026, ending a prolonged period during which the province operated without a substantive provincial police commissioner.

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane formally introduced Lt Gen Adams during an announcement on Thursday, describing him as one of SAPS’ most experienced operational commanders.

According to SAPS, Adams brings 34 years of policing experience and has built his career in specialised operational environments. He has served as a Public Order Police member, National Intervention Unit operator and trainer, Advanced VIP Close Protector, and was among the pioneering members of the elite Counter Assault Team. He has also held senior leadership positions, including Cluster Commander of Potchefstroom, District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum District, District Commissioner of Mangaung and, most recently, Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing in the Free State.

The appointment forms part of the SAPS Reset Agenda, which seeks to strengthen ethical leadership, accountability, discipline and operational excellence across the police service.

In outlining the expectations for the new commissioner, Lt Gen Dimpane said Adams assumes office at a critical time for organisational renewal. He is expected to strengthen leadership across the province’s five policing districts and 86 police stations, improve operational readiness, reinforce discipline and consequence management, and deepen partnerships with communities in the fight against crime.

The Acting National Commissioner also said the new provincial commissioner is expected to intensify intelligence-led policing, strengthen detective services, enhance visible policing and ensure that police stations become centres of service excellence where residents feel safer because of the work of SAPS.

Meanwhile, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management (COSATMA) has welcomed the appointment, describing it as an important step towards restoring stability within the province’s policing structures.

Committee Chairperson Hon. Freddy Sonakile said the province had been without a substantive Provincial Commissioner for almost two years, making the appointment both timely and necessary.

“After almost two years without a substantive Provincial Commissioner, this appointment brings much-needed stability and leadership at a critical time for policing in our province,” Sonakile said.

He noted that Adams assumes office as the province continues to confront serious crime challenges and follows recent concerns raised by the South African Human Rights Commission regarding conditions at several police stations.

“Our communities deserve a police service that is professional, visible, accountable and responsive,” Sonakile added.

The committee also expressed appreciation to Major General Asaneng and Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Naidoo for providing leadership and ensuring continuity during the extended transition period.

COSATMA reaffirmed its commitment to exercising its constitutional oversight role by conducting police station visits, engaging communities, scrutinising reports and holding SAPS accountable where improvements are needed.

The committee further expressed confidence that Lt Gen Adams would work constructively with the Legislature, the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service and the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management to improve policing outcomes across the province.

“The North West cannot become a playground for criminals. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the rule of law is upheld, communities are protected, and policing in our province continues to improve through accountability, cooperation and effective oversight,” Sonakile said.

As Lt Gen Adams prepares to take office on Friday, expectations will be high that his extensive operational experience will translate into improved policing, stronger leadership and greater public confidence in the SAPS across the North West Province.
