PRETORIA — The national Department of Social Development has condemned a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows children consuming alcohol in the presence of adults, saying it is “shocked” by the footage and is moving to hold those responsible accountable.

In a media statement issued on 28 December 2025, the department said it is investigating the matter and called on members of the public who witnessed the incident — or who have information on where it happened — to come forward and report it.

The department warned that the festive season, while meant to be a time of “love, rest and renewal”, often brings increased risks linked to excessive alcohol use and substance abuse, particularly among children and young people, with damaging impacts on families and communities.

It reminded parents and caregivers of their duty to protect children and promote safe environments, adding that festive celebrations should encourage healthy values, positive role-modelling and child protection in line with the Children’s Act (38 of 2005).

Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe urged South Africans to avoid excessive alcohol use and reject drugs, noting that substance abuse fuels violence, contributes to road fatalities and can derail the future of children and young people.

The department also encouraged those struggling with alcohol or drug dependency to seek help through local Social Development offices or by calling 0800 12 13 14 or SMSing 32312, and advised families to confirm that any treatment centre is registered with the department.
