In a time when many young people are searching for purpose, Onalenna Moepeng is walking boldly in hers. The former treasurer of the AJ Wookey Youth Ministry has been appointed as the Convenor-Elect of the South African Synod Youth Ministry (SASYM)—a national leadership role that places her at the helm of one of the most influential youth structures in the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA).
Her appointment was confirmed at the 2025 Synodical Conference held at Lykso from 3–6 April, a moment her home church describes with pride and affirmation:
“We are extremely proud of you, Ona, and we know you will be a great leader. God is within her; she will not fall.”

A Foundation Built in Faith
Onalenna’s journey began in the pews of Sunday school, led by her mother’s unwavering faith.
“Growing up, Sunday school was non-negotiable—even when my mom wasn’t going to church, she made sure we did,” she recalls.
Her spiritual awakening deepened through the influence of her older sister, who helped her understand what it meant to accept Christ personally.
“That relationship with God is what fuels my ministry—my obedience isn’t just for me, but for the soul on the other side of it.”
Reviving a Generation After COVID
After the COVID-19 pandemic, many churches saw their youth ministries collapse. For Onalenna, the silence in her church post-lockdown was heartbreaking.
“Our predecessors were lively and united. Without youth in church, the body of Christ begins to vanish. I felt called to help bring it back.”
Her commitment led her to leadership roles where she poured her heart into building a space of belonging, growth, and purpose for young people.
A Leadership Anchored in God
Taking on the responsibilities of Convenor-Elect is no small task, but Onalenna embraces it with humility and boldness.
“The task is huge, but my God is greater. Ha go na bongozi la.”
She believes that leadership means accepting challenges, using every resource available, and leaning on community. Her strength?
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
Balancing Faith, Leadership and Life
Like many young professionals, Onalenna wears many hats—and it isn’t always easy.
“If my spirit is fed, I’m able to carry everything else. But I have days when I fall short. I’m learning to extend grace to myself the same way I do for others.”
Her leadership style is grounded in support, empowerment and inclusivity:
“People flourish where they feel they belong. As a leader, I must make sure every young person feels seen and valued.”
A Vision for the Youth Ministry
Now as Convenor-Elect, Onalenna hopes to see the youth ministry:
• Grow in spiritual depth and biblical understanding,
• Raise a generation of believers who exalt Jesus and expand His influence in the world,
• Advocate for transformative justice within the church and society.
She’s passionate about confronting real issues like youth unemployment, mental health, and inclusion.
“The Synod office must do more—career guidance workshops, job application support, even a central fund to help youth access short courses and skills development. These aren’t extras—they’re essentials.”

Her Anchor and Advice to the Youth
When asked about her personal scripture, she doesn’t hesitate: Psalm 91.
“We are not perfect—but God is. Don’t trade an eternal relationship with Him for momentary pleasure.”
Her spiritual disciplines are simple yet powerful: prayer, time in the Word, and surrounding herself with the right influences.
“We become what and who we spend time with.”
A Leader for Her Generation
Onalenna Moepeng’s rise is not about a title—it’s about purpose. Her story is one of faith, obedience, and bold leadership in a time when the church needs it most. She is leading not from a podium, but from her knees in prayer.
And as her AJ Wookey Youth Ministry family rightly put it:
“God is within her; she will not fall.”
