Recently, a question was raised about how external service providers are picked to fix water problems in struggling municipalities. The Minister of Water and Sanitation explained the steps clearly to ensure things are done right.

(a) How Providers are Picked:

The Water Services Authority (WSA) checks if a provider can handle the job well. They look at technical skills, money management, and how they run things. Reports from COGTA and other agencies also help decide.

(b) How Contracts are Made:

(i) Finding Good Providers: The municipality works with COGTA to find providers who can do the job right.

(ii) Getting Approval: The WSA asks for permission from the Council to hire the chosen provider.

(iii) Asking the Public: They also ask the public for ideas before finalizing the deal.

(iv) Making a Plan: Once everyone agrees, they make a plan on how things will work and what to do if things go wrong.

These steps show how much effort goes into making sure water problems get fixed properly. It’s important to have good providers who can do the job well and keep everyone informed along the way.
