Vryburg mourns the passing of local businessman Hannes van Aswegen

VRYBURG — The local business community is paying tribute to Hannes van Aswegen (11 Feb 1964 – 10 Nov 2025), a respected retailer, security-sector executive and mentor whose steady leadership and generosity touched colleagues across the district.

Van Aswegen served as a director of Pick n Pay Vryburg since 2003, where staff credit him for calm, people-first management and a hands-on approach to customer service. In 2021 he broadened his footprint by helping steer Darksky Security Forces as director and managing/financial director, bringing disciplined governance and tight operational controls to a growing small enterprise.

Before business, Van Aswegen worked in public service as a detective in the South African Police Service (1980–1987)—experience friends say shaped his integrity, reliability and commitment to community. Those qualities carried into his private ventures, where he was known for backing local suppliers, creating opportunities for young people and quietly assisting staff families in times of need.

A builder of people and networks

Colleagues describe Van Aswegen as a patient mentor who believed that businesses succeed when people are supported to grow. Former trainees and department leads at Pick n Pay recalled how he invested time in training, insisted on fair dealing with customers and championed internal promotion. At Darksky Security Forces, partners highlighted his insistence on clear books, prompt payment practices and continuous upskilling for guards and supervisors.

Wider community life

Outside the workplace, Van Aswegen was an enthusiastic contributor to Vryburg’s social fabric—deeply involved in polocrosse and Western Mounted Games, and well known within South Africa’s koi and pond-keeping community for freely sharing technical advice. Tributes on social media and community forums hailed him as a “true gentleman” with a contagious laugh whose door was always open.

What his passing means for Vryburg commerce

Local business bodies say Van Aswegen’s passing leaves a leadership gap—particularly in retail operations and SME security services—where his practical mentorship helped stabilize teams and keep money circulating in the town. Peers noted that his style—firm on standards, generous with time—became a quiet benchmark for how to run neighborhood enterprises in tough trading conditions.

Van Aswegen is survived by Nicola and family. Memorial details will be communicated by the family in due course.

On behalf of our readers and advertisers, The Vryburg Independent Post extends heartfelt condolences to the Van Aswegen family, his colleagues at Pick n Pay and Darksky Security Forces, and the many friends he made through sport and community life. May his legacy of integrity, service and kindness continue in the businesses and people he helped build.
