SAWS outlook: wetter summer on the way — with Level-2 storm risk for parts of North West

VRYBURG — 6 Dec 2025. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says South Africa is edging from neutral conditions toward a weak La Niña this summer, a pattern that typically brings above-normal rainfall to the north-eastern parts of the country through late summer. Minimum temperatures are widely expected to be above normal, with cooler-than-usual maximums in the north-east and hotter conditions in the south-west, adding confidence to a wetter season overall.

SAWS says it will keep monitoring conditions and issue updates as the season evolves.

What a wetter summer means

Water & energy: Above-normal rain in summer-rainfall regions could lift dam levels and storage, but may also trigger flash flooding in flood-prone areas. Decision-makers are urged to communicate risks early.

Health: Wetter, warmer conditions raise the potential for localised to widespread flooding, heat-related illness and UV exposure risks; authorities are advised to intensify public messaging and early-warning systems.

Agriculture: Prospects are broadly positive for crops and livestock, but farmers should guard against waterlogging, bolster drainage, conserve soil and water, and monitor pests and diseases during wet spells.

Safety tips for residents

During storm periods, avoid low-water bridges, never cross fast-moving water, and share local conditions with community groups and emergency services. SAWS issues daily updates, including traveller forecasts and impact-based warnings.
