The announcement follows confirmation that a third learner, who had been hospitalised after the crash, passed away over the weekend, bringing the total number of learner fatalities to three, along with the driver. The accident occurred on Wednesday, 8 April, while the learners were travelling from Delareyville to Vryburg.

In its statement, the Department expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the affected families, classmates, and educators. The memorial service is expected to provide a space for collective mourning, reflection, and support for the grieving community.

The Department further indicated that funeral arrangements for the deceased learners will be communicated once consultations with the families have been finalised.

Meanwhile, one learner who survived the crash remains in recovery, with the Department noting positive progress following medical treatment.

The memorial service is expected to draw learners, educators, government officials, and community members as Vryburg continues to come to terms with the devastating loss.
