PRETORIA : Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre escapee Edward Kgomotso Madiba has been rearrested within 72 hours of his escape, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed.

Madiba escaped from the correctional centre near Mahikeng on 6 September while serving a 20-year sentence. The DCS National Tracing Team was activated shortly after the escape and, with the assistance of technology and law-enforcement partners, tracked him through several locations in North West, including Borakalalo Game Reserve, Lebotloane and Damonsville.

He was eventually arrested  and has since been transferred to Kgoši Mampuru II C-Max Correctional Centre, where he remains in custody.

DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale warned that escapees would be pursued and returned to custody, while those who assist them could face legal consequences.

Meanwhile, the internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape continues. Eight correctional officials remain suspended pending the outcome of due process.

The department thanked its National Tracing Team, law-enforcement partners and members of the public who assisted in the successful operation.
