VRYBURG, NORTH WEST – Messages of grief and solidarity continue to pour in following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two learners from Vryburg High School and a driver yesterday morning.
The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, has extended his deepest condolences to the affected families. According to the department, the fatal accident occurred on the N14 between Delareyville and Vryburg at around 07:00 on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, when the sedan carrying the learners collided head-on with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Authorities confirmed that a 43-year-old driver and two learners aged 14 and 15 died at the scene, while two other learners, both aged 17, sustained serious injuries and were transported to Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital. The truck driver was also treated for minor injuries.
Police have since opened a case of culpable homicide, with investigations into the cause of the accident ongoing.
In the day following the tragedy, schools across Vryburg and surrounding areas have come together to support Hoërskool Vryburg and the grieving families.


Morning Star Academy expressed solidarity with the school community, offering condolences to families, teachers, and learners, while wishing the injured a full recovery.
Similarly, Colinda Secondary School shared a heartfelt tribute, acknowledging the devastating loss and praying for healing and comfort for all those affected.
Earlier, Kismet Secondary School also paid tribute to the deceased learners, highlighting the widespread impact of the tragedy across the education community.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout Vryburg and neighbouring areas, with learners, educators, and residents united in grief.
As investigations continue, counselling and psychosocial support are being made available to those affected.
The community continues to rally around the families, with messages of prayer, strength and unity reflecting the deep sense of loss felt across the province.
