The Democratic Alliance in Matlosana has taken it upon themselves to ensure that 1000 evicted destitute and homeless people are relocated by the City of Matlosana or they will report this serious matter to the South African Human Right’s Commission (SAHRC).

Almost 1000 people were evicted by court order in Tigane. The court application was brought by the City of Matlosana and a private entity.

“The evicted persons were living near an abattoir, which could lead to various health risks and the open fire next to the factory will not only contaminate the chicken but also poses fire risks. While the eviction order was rational and legal, the municipality has a constitutional obligation to ensure that the affected persons aren’t left homeless.” Expressed Councillor Maritha Coetzee.

According to the DA Councillor , they are hanging on argument to a legislation that obliges the minicipality to provide alternative temporary accommodation to evicted people. “This means a local government authority has a constitutional duty to provide alternative accommodation to people who are likely to be rendered homeless as a result of an eviction. Meaning the local authority must have an emergency housing plan in place that caters for such instances.” Coetzee said .
