President Ramaphosa Appoints Angie Motshekga as Acting President

On Saturday, 17 August 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms. Angie Motshekga, as Acting President of South Africa. This temporary appointment is due to President Ramaphosa’s working visit to Harare, Zimbabwe, where he is attending the 44th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Ms. Angie Motshekga, who took on the role of Minister of Defence and Military Veterans following the 2024 National Elections, is a seasoned politician with a long history of public service. Before her current position, Motshekga served as the Minister of Basic Education, a role she held for over a decade, where she was instrumental in various educational reforms. Her appointment as Acting President highlights the trust and confidence President Ramaphosa has in her leadership abilities.

As Minister of Defence, Motshekga is now tasked with overseeing the country’s military affairs, a significant shift from her previous focus on education. Her brief tenure as Acting President today marks another milestone in her distinguished career.
